Welcome to Ad Astra Campers! We’re so excited to share our crazy and fun adventures with all of you. Let me start by introducing you to our crew! We are a family of 5 from Kansas City. Myself (Adam), my wife (Malerie), and our three kiddos; Lucy, June, and Banks. Oh, also our two pups; Pepper and Porter!
I’ve been a life long camper and fisherman. Spending time outdoors is a fun outlet that I assumed I would be going alone or maybe one of the kids or dogs would eventually join me. I first purchased a pop-up camper from a good friend of mine in November of 2019, before COVID literally changed the world. It was my trial run to see if a camper was something we would actually use. Initially I planned to use it for long weekend fishing trips and the occasional outing with the kids. Little did I know Malerie would take an interest, let alone dive in head first to traveling! The pop-up certainly needed some TLC but that was part of the fun. I’m excited to show you the transformation of that camper in an upcoming blog. We’re by no means experts on this whole camping thing but we sure do love it.
A large part of our traveling revolves around fly fishing. I grew up fishing with traditional tackle primarily around Kansas and Missouri. Fly fishing was nowhere on my radar. Who knew you could fly fish in the Midwest?! I am the type of person that has to be busy all the time…ALL THE TIME. When the kids were very young I needed an outlet to stay busy at home so I took a chance and signed up for a fly fishing men’s trip. I thoroughly enjoyed this new world that I’d discovered. Because of that, fly fishing eventually lead to fly tying. That keeps me busy when I am not able to be on the water. In fact, fly tying became something fun for me and my oldest, Lucy, to do together. You can check out my Fly Shop on Etsy. The link to the store is below. I’m also working on some fun videos – stay tuned.
This blog is intended to share our experiences, both good and bad, with you. We’ve learned a lot during our short amount of traveling. Everything from water leakage, tires blowing on the side of a tiny two lane road, the must stay campgrounds, awesome hacks, and all things in between. Any insight, tips and tricks we learn along the way we will share with you. We hope you find this helpful, impactful, and most importantly fun! We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on our most recent travels here. You can also follow along on our adventures via Instagram. Thank you for joining us. We can’t wait to show you where we go next!
